Hurley Sr. raisingfunds for St. Anthony
Bob Hurley Sr. never has looked past the next game, one key to his legendary coaching career at national powerhouse St. Anthony of Jersey City. For once, however, he is looking ahead for the school's financial well being. In the last week, Hurley has appeared on WFAN's "Boomer and Carton Morning Show" and attended last Wednesday's Knicks Pacers game to champion the effort.
"We don't want to become Rice or Tolentine or Power Memorial or Paterson Catholic, those schools who weren't able to plan in advance," Hurley told The Rumble's Zach Braziller. "It's sophisticated. It's trying to reach people in all different areas. It's more than I know being an old school basketball coach with a limited understanding of the new world of social media and Twitter."
Hurley credited the idea to TeamWorks Media, the company that filmed the documentary of Hurley and his team, "The Street Stops Here."
"I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will be a good year, because it will give the plan some legs," said Hurley, a retired Tre Mason Authentic Jersey corrections officer.
Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010, Hurley has coached at St. Anthony for 42 years. The subject of Adrian Wojnarowski's best selling book, "The Miracle of St. Anthony," Hurley has won more than 1,000 basketball games in his career, 25 state titles and four national titles.
The site is as much about basketball as the school, which says over the last 20 years 100 percent of its students have gained college acceptance.
In addition to asking for donations, St. Anthony is using its basketball program to raise money. The site offers those interested to purchase a St. Anthony jersey, baseball hat, sit it on a practice, get a Hurley voice mail recording, receive a coaching clinic from Hurley or even be an honorary assistant coach for a game.
St. Anthony's has an enrollment of roughly 250 students, most of whom live near the poverty line, according to the school. It's budget is half subsidized via donations. Tuition is $6,000 and the school needs to raise at least $1.5 a year to cover the difference.
Sanchez earned $847 from his mythical $20 win bet on eight races Tuesday night. The contest continues the next four Tuesdays (Nov. 26, Dec. 3, 10 and 17). The final round is set for Sat., Dec. 21, Yonkers' final day of racing for the season.
Church pub called a Aaron Donald Rams Jersey foul brew
Jobs WeeklyJob FairPlace an AdCareers and Worklife BlogBusiness BlogSalary WizardSearch New CarsSearch Pre Owned CarsVehicle ReviewsClassic Cars BlogThe Bike Blog2013 Fall Auto Show Guide (PDF)ALBANY The found itself on unfamiliar ground Wednesday as Ten Broeck Triangle residents assailed a plan to put a brewery and pub in a 151 year old as an Greg Robinson Rams Jersey assault on the historic, quiet character of their neighborhood.
The city's foremost preservation group, which says it has spent some $733,000 trying to stabilize the church since acquiring it in 2003, contends, however, that the plan to convert St. Joseph's into the may be the last, best chance to save it.
But if only one of the two can survive, some neighbors said, the neighborhood is more important than any one building in it.
TALK ABOUT THIS ON TABLE HOPPING
The fate of the controversial proposal by two New Jersey partners now sits in the Rams Aaron Donald Jersey hands of the city's , which heard some two and a half hours of testimony Wednesday from some who believe projects like Ravens Head can help transform Albany's image into a beacon for creative redevelopment, and others who feel it will destroy a neighborhood that has battled back against crime and neglect.
"We're fighting for what we've built and what we believe in," said , who lives on First Street and is president of Ten Broeck Triangle Preservation League, a neighborhood group that has rallied against the plan.
"I hear a lot of concern for the church," O'Neill said. "I do not hear concern for the neighborhood."
O'Neill and others said they fear the effects that the introduction of alcohol into the neighborhood on the eastern edge of Arbor Hill will have, its impact on their property values and the already tight street parking situation on blocks that will also soon become subject to the city's new residential permit parking system.
Others feared that brewery, led by Ravens Head president and brewer , lacks the capital to manage the aging building and make the business succeed.
And while Cleary, Rams Greg Robinson Jersey whose background is in construction and who left his full time job to pursue the brewery idea, acknowledged the business is a start up, he said his goal is to build community investment in it and that he is confident he can secure initial financing, now estimated at more than $3 million, to get the brewery off the ground.
Among speakers who said they lived in the neighborhood, opinion tracked roughly 2 1 against the proposal, which calls for a brewery and restaurant and pub inside the 17,500 square foot church at 38 Ten Broeck St.
Historic Albany bought the building from the city for $10 after a previous plan to redevelop it folded and the city seized it through eminent domain as sections of it were feared to be near collapse.
The opposition came despite recent changes to the plan, in which the applicants agreed to close the bar and restaurant on Sundays and retain rights to at least 75 off street parking spaces.
Because a brewery is not allowed under the church's existing zoning, which permits only one and two family homes, Ravens Head needs a variance granted by the BZA to move forward. Cleary's attorney, , said the fact that the church has been largely vacant since 1981 is proof that a change of zoning is essential to attracting the kind use that will generate enough money to save it.
"If you don't get an economically viable use in the church, its preservation will be at risk," Lynch said. "At the end of the day, we all have to live with what happens to this building if the variance is not granted."
Meanwhile, Historic Albany's executive director, , revealed for the first time Wednesday night that in the last month thieves looted much of the church's pipes and wiring, inflicting some $12,000 in damage.
Mansion Neighborhood resident said the July 2011 collapse of in the South End, which led to the historic building's demolition after years of abandonment, makes the potential consequences of rejecting the project clear. Approving it, meanwhile, could serve to attract the kind of creative young people needed to help keep a city thriving, he said.
WSSU's chancellor says Virginia State's coach was 'out of control'
Quarterback Rudy Johnson of Winston Salem State removed a pair of wraparound sunglasses Monday, revealing some of the wounds he suffered when he was beaten last week in a campus restroom.
Johnson, along with Chancellor Donald J. Reaves of WSSU, spoke during a media conference to supply further details of the incident that led to the cancellation of the CIAA championship football game. The 20 minute session also allowed Reaves a chance to refute the account of Virginia State cheap oakleys officials and provided a glimpse into WSSU's plan to seek restitution.
The appearance was Johnson's first in public since the incident. He said he was assaulted by as many as six Virginia State players during a conference awards luncheon.
Johnson said he was approached while in the restroom and was asked if he was the Rams' starting quarterback. He replied that he was and said the Virginia State players began "trash talking."
"I said, 'I'm not going to talk a lot of trash, we'll just see you on the field,'" Johnson said Monday. "I go to wash my hands, somebody tapped my shoulder. As soon as I turned around, I got hit. I squared him up, somebody hit me on my blind side of my head, and that's when I fell. I felt about four or five feet stomping on me, kicking me."
According to Johnson, WSSU players Daniel Mungin and John Rizor were in nearby stalls when the attack started. He said that the Virginia State players scrambled out of the restroom when his teammates interceded.
Johnson suffered a number of injuries, most noticeably cuts and bruises around his right eye. He also said that his back and ribs are sore but that the headache he had the first 24 hours after the attack was gone.
Johnson said he will be examined chi hair straightener for a concussion, but he has returned to practice and is expected to play Saturday when WSSU meets Slippery Rock in the first round of the Division II playoffs.
One of the Virginia State players, backup running back Lamont Darnell Britt, 22, of Portsmouth, Va., was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury. Britt has been suspended from the team pending a school investigation. Three other players were questioned by police but were not charged.
Johnson said he had no prior contact with any VSU players and that he could not identify his assailants. WSSU staff did not make Mungin and Rizor available for comment.
"It happened so fast, I really can't (identify them)," Johnson said. "I tried to, but I can't. When I turned around, I could barely see the guy who hit me until after he hit me. And while I'm looking at him, somebody hit me from the side.
"It wasn't expected we were at a formal banquet. Who expects that?"
CIAA officials ruled Virginia State ineligible for the postseason late Saturday night. The Virginia State administration held a media conference Monday morning in Ettrick, Va., to say the school would conduct its own investigation. Coach Latrell Scott of VSU downplayed the possibility that additional players could be charged, saying "there was a rush to judgment."
"I acknowledge that we had one young man who made a bad decision," Scott said, "as young men sometimes do."
Keith T. Miller, Virginia State's president, said he hopes to have the results of the investigation in the next week. Reaves said WSSU has not been contacted to assist in that investigation. uggs clearance
Reaves also said that WSSU is preparing to file a formal complaint with the CIAA and the NCAA to further sort things out and seek punishment against Virginia State. He said the complaint will allege that Virginia State lacked institutional control over its football team while it was in Winston Salem.
Reaves pointed out that there were no senior administrators from Virginia State at the luncheon, leaving Scott in charge. Reaves said Scott was uncooperative in the moments after the altercation and was nearly arrested by campus police.
"The supervision of that team was left to the football coach, a person who was not cooperative," Reaves said, "who failed to cooperate and refused to cooperate and came very close to being arrested for the obstruction with regards to the police in their attempt to get things under control.
From the streets to the field
AUSTIN The movie "The Johnny Manziel Authentic Jersey Blind Side" captured the story of NFL player Michael Oher, who escaped a life of violence and poverty to one of safety and privilege.
That same scenario played out at Westlake High School in Austin.
At 6'4" and 320 pounds, it's hard to miss Stefan Beard. On Friday nights, you can spot him on the sidelines at Westlake football games as number 78. You won't see him playing on the field, but not because he lacks skill.
"I think he has the ability to be a good player," said Westlake High School head football coach Darren Allman.
Beard doesn't play because of a decision he made six months ago to leave a life of violence behind for peace in Austin.
"The lifestyle there is like, if you make it past 30, you're blessed," Beard said. "I didn't really have that much to think about.
Beard is the youngest of four children. His dad died when he was three years old, and when he was Blake Bortles Authentic Jersey nine, his mom lost her job after being diagnosed with cancer, leaving his family struggling.
"Money, food, housing, like, stuff that you really need," said Beard, who was raised on the west side of Chicago, a city with one of the highest murder rates in the country.
"Everybody was pretty much in a gang," Beard said.
Schools weren't exempt from violence.
"Riding a bus wasn't actually safe for you, because the bus that you ride has to go through another neighborhood and it stops. And people can be waiting at the bus stop and stuff can happen," Beard said.
Even the classrooms were dangerous.
"Every day someone's fighting in the classrooms," Beard said. "Someone could start fighting, and the next thing you know, the teacher is just, like, throwing her hands up. Like, 'I can't even teach.'"
By the eighth grade, Beard followed in his brother's footsteps by joining a gang.
"I carried a gun, of course," Beard said. "It was basic to use. It's like, this is what we've got to do, really, if we want to go back home. Leaving school, we were going home one day and someone pulled up and just started shooting."
Beard was walking with his best friend, who was killed.
"I really don't want to talk about it," Beard said.
Beard's freshman year, he found solace on the football field with players from rival neighborhoods.
"The people were like, we don't care what neighborhood we're from, we're just going to try to win some football games."
"I see opportunity of me just going out and showing people what I'm really about," Beard said. "I know once I stopped playing sports I was going to go back to the streets."
Football led to basketball and to Coach Louis Adams, who saw something in the charismatic teen. He called his friend, former Chicago resident turned Austinite Philip Dorr.
"He said, 'We need to get him out of here,'" Dorr said. "He said, Jaguars Blake Bortles Jersey 'He's a great kid.'"
Trusting his friend and his faith, Dorr agreed to allow Beard to move in with him.
"What are the odds Women's Johnny Manziel Jersey of an old white guy from rural Iowa meeting an inner city black kid in Chicago and living in Austin, Texas? You know, God is a pretty awesome God," Dorr said.
With his mother's support, Beard decided to detour off a road to nowhere and moved to Austin to complete his senior year at Westlake High. At the time, he didn't know it would mean giving up football. But once he was there, the UIL ruled Stefan ineligible to play.
"Stefan's situation was mostly based on the residency rule, which is, and it came down to really, did he have any other choice but to come here?" coach Darren Allman said.
Despite his disappointment, Beard saw the bigger picture.
"I've been through even harder stuff than this, just not to play football, and I'm still at a good school that I can still go to college," he said.
Stefan plans to go to Baylor University to play football on a full scholarship. He said he'll major in business and someday return to Chicago to help youth there realize their circumstances don't define them.
Ravens a home run for Steelers
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle and center fielder Andrew McCutchen donned Steelers jerseys and waved Terrible Towels before the game, but that wasn the only baseball reference to take out of Sunday 19 16 win over the Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field.
After a 32 yard Justin Tucker field goal cut the Steelers lead to 13 9 early in the fourth quarter, Ravens coach John Harbaugh called for a bunt onside kick " a nifty name for Tucker nudging the ball forward, hopefully quickly and discreetly enough that he or someone else can chase it down.
And the call, gutsy " some might say desperate given the time left and Baltimore inability to stop the run " as it was, backfired, allowing the Steelers a short field en route to a 38 yard Shaun Suisham field goal.
A try that might never have been possible if the Ravens didn try to play some small ball.
Their guy made a great play, Harbaugh said. He covered a lot of ground very quickly to get to that ball.
Tucker said he works with the grounds crew at Baltimore practice facility in Owings Mills, Md., purposefully destroying perfectly good sod in order to mimic conditions at Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
But with Pitt having played Old Dominion on Saturday night, the Heinz Field turf was more than a few notches below pristine, a muckiness that likely limited Tucker.
It tough on this field because the turf is so poor, Tucker said. Wholesale NFL Jerseys You can really practice that type of kick on this turf.
The call was made, Harbaugh said, to grab another possession. Of the Steelers eight drives, four of them included nine or more plays. The average number of plays was 7.4, and Pittsburgh held a 31:01 28:59 advantage in time of possession.
We were struggling to get possessions and get our offense on the field, Harbaugh said.
Williams, who finished with three tackles, was the primary pursuer, but several members of the Baltimore kickoff team missed their blocks. There was also an offside call, and the officials ruled the ball did not travel 10 yards.
We had a guy offsides, Harbaugh said. To me, that the unforgivable part of the whole thing. I don want to see a guy offsides.
Nor did he want to see his kicker blasted by Sylvester, whose thunderous hit bloodied Tucker ear and gave Williams time to cover the bunt, though no throw to first was needed.
That a pretty common surprise onside (kick), that bunt up the middle kind of play, Tucker said. The idea is that the kicker will recover it. . I love that we aggressive. And that the way we going to continue to be.
