There are those who like football
Somehow, someway, we have reached week 16 of the 2013 NFL season. Though a few things have been decided, many playoff situations are still up in the air, and will come down to these final two weeks of the regular season. Which teams will compete in the tournament for the Vince Lombardi Trophy? And which teams will be watching the playoffs from their televisions? Things are getting intense.
In my weekly predictions this week, I went a poor 8 8 to put me at 134 89 1 (60.09%) on the season. A bad year of predictions has struck me and a lot of others. I will try my best to get that up as high as I can this week. Details on how you can play with us are at the bottom of this blog post. Right now, though, let us get to it. Here are the picks for a very important week 16:
Miami Dolphins (8 6) vs. Buffalo Bills (5 9) Over the last few chi flat iron weeks, there has definitely been some development in that Dolphin offense. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill is being more efficient in his throws, the running game situation is decent, and Tannehill is finding some of his receivers. With a weak AFC wild card, the Dolphins are probably the favorites to win that 6 seed. Though they should probably be a one and done team in the postseason, they are a club to watch moving forward.
The Bills are also a club to watch moving forward, but they have more to work to do. Rookie quarterback EJ Manuel is still far from perfection, the running back situation has been disappointing, and the receivers are nothing to brag about either.
This is a battle of decent and weak. The better team gets the victory. Winner: Dolphins
New Orleans Saints (10 4) vs. Carolina Panthers (10 4) I cannot deny it: the Saints are an inconsistent team. Though Drew Brees and that pass happy offense can look superb at times, there are other instances where they have trouble moving the football, and that leads to results like last week's game against the Rams. Brees just needs to use his elite talent to put this team together, and if he can do that, then they still have Super Bowl potential.
As for the Panthers, Cam Newton and the crew continue to look sharp. Newton has developed into a great, young athlete, that running game with DeAngelo Williams stepped up last week, and the receivers are decent as well. Though this team does not have Super Bowl material written all over them, they are still a team to look out for when the postseason arrives.
Though this is a tough pick, I will say that after a bad performance last Sunday, New Orleans recovers. Winner: Saints
Minnesota Vikings (4 9 1) vs. Cincinnati Bengals (9 5) Even without star running fake oakley sunglasses back Adrian Peterson and backup running back Toby Gerhart, the Vikings actually looked great in last week's win over the Eagles. Though I have doubts as to whether Matt Cassel and the crew can keep this up, I have to give them some credit and say that they are reminding me a little bit of last year's playoff team.
Last week's performance is exactly why I am afraid that the Bengals are not legit. Though quarterback Andy Dalton is talented, rookie running back Giovani Bernard is great, and AJ Green is fantastic, they often have trouble putting the offense together and moving the football. If they want to be true Super Bowl contenders, that cannot happen.
This is somewhat of a difficult pick because of last week's surprising performances. However, at home, I will say that the more talented team gets the victory. Would not bet on it. Winner: Bengals
Denver Broncos (11 3) vs. Houston Texans (2 12) Despite an upset loss to the Chargers on Thursday night, I remain a huge believer in the Broncos. Not only do they have quarterback Peyton Manning, one of the great players in the game, but they have some fantastic receiver weapons, and a solid running game. Though Seattle is up there, I still have a feeling that they will win it all.
As for the Texans, they could not be more opposite. Rookie quarterback Case Keenum is looking terrible, that offense is getting nothing going, and they are going to have some major questions heading into the off season. I cannot believe that me and so many other analysts picked them to win the division in August.
Denver should recover and get the easy win. Winner: Broncos
Tennessee Titans (5 9) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (4 10) Under backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Titans are nothing more than a weak mediocre team. Fitzpatrick has never been very efficient, running back Chris Johnson has been decent but not great, and those receivers still have room for improvement as well. Perhaps when Jake Locker comes back from injury next year, this team will be something more special. Right now, they are not.
The Jaguars are also nothing special. Quarterback Chad Henne is one of the weakest NFL starting quarterbacks around, running back Maurice Jones Drew is injured, and that receiving crew is weak with Cecil Shorts also banged up. The bottom line? This team is one huge mess that has a very questionable future ahead.
Though I am not particularly a fan of either team, I will go with the one that I find slightly better. Winner: Titans
Indianapolis Colts (9 5) vs. Kansas City Chiefs (11 3) Even though I got a nice win last week, I still have a lot of question marks about the Colts. This team started off great, but production has declined ever since. Quarterback Andrew Luck does not have a lot of receiving options, the running game is not productive at all, and I am worried that it will not end well for the Colts in the playoffs. Stay tuned.
As for the Chiefs, I am a believer. Quarterback Alex Smith is a guy who can lead an offense and pull through when he has to, but we now know that he is not the real star of this offense. That title belongs to running back Jamaal Charles, who can not only run the ball but receive it as well. If that offense can continue to produce and do so against good teams, this could be a true Super uggs clearance Bowl contender down the road.
As far as this pick goes, I trust Kansas City more. And they are at home. Winner: Chiefs
Dallas Cowboys (7 7) vs. Washington Redskins (3 11) Ever since I started this blog last year, a lot of things have changed. The play of Tony Romo and the Cowboys is not one of them. Every freaking year, this team chokes when they need to pull through. Every year. Though Romo is talented, DeMarco Murray can run it, and Dez Bryant is a great receiver, I cannot give them a lot of credit if they never pull through when they have to.
The Redskins have benched Robert Griffin III for the rest of the season in favor of quarterback Kirk Cousins. Honestly, this team has fallen so far below expectations that it is hard to care. Though they have some young talent in running back Alfred Morris and wide receiver Pierre Garcon, they just cannot seem to get the job done as they did last year. The future is definitely in question.
Despite their recent failures, I will give Dallas one more chance. If they cannot win this game, they cannot beat anybody. Winner: Cowboys
Cleveland Browns (4 10) vs. New York Jets (6 8) Though the Browns have not looked quite as bad as last season, you cannot argue with the fact that they have one of the weakest teams in the NFL. Quarterback Jason Campbell is borderline mediocre, but I doubt he is the QB of the future, the running game situation is ugly, and though wide receiver Josh Gordon has quickly turned into a beast, he cannot do it all.
Though their record is slightly better than their opponents, do not be fooled by the Jets. Quarterback Geno Smith is having a very bad rookie season, and the overall talent on that roster is lacking. This is a bad team that still has a lot of work to do before they can become playoff contenders.
This is a very unattractive match up both entertainment wise and betting wise. I will go with what I feel is the slightly better team on the road. Shaky pick. Winner: Browns
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4 10) vs. St. Louis Rams (6 8) Mike Glennon and the Buccaneers are, to put it simply, another bad team. This team's only decent offensive talent is at the wide receiver position with Vincent Jackson. That is it. Though I am uncertain on whether or not Glennon will be the future of this team, regardless, it is going to take some time before this team is a playoff contender.
The Rams are confusing. After quarterback Sam Bradford got injured, Zac Stacy stepped up and this team got wins. I just jumped on their bandwagon, only to see them lose games. Then, after picking them to lose to the Saints, they are able to get an easy upset victory. Here is the bottom line: Although they do have talent with Stacy and wide receiver Tavon Austin, this team is led by a back up quarterback in Kellen Clemens. Consider them mediocre with upside.

Marvin Lewis started his postgame remarks by saying "I guess we will continue to major in thrilling at this point." The four game winning streak in October was thrilling. These past three games have been more like getting ice cream after a root canal.
The Bengals broke a two game losing streak on Sunday with a 41 20 victory over Cleveland at Paul Brown Stadium, but this was far from your garden variety 21 point win. The Bengals spotted the Browns 13 points in the first quarter before scoring a franchise record 31 in the second with touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams.
Bengals blog
With the win, the Bengals go into their bye week at 7 4 but more importantly have a 2 game lead on the Browns, Ravens and Steelers, who are all 4 6.
"We're in a good position right now," Andy Dalton said. "For us to be leading the division and having this bye right now and a chance to get healthy and a chance to get some rest, it comes at a good time for us."
Dalton threw three touchdowns but also had two interceptions. Green had a career low with seven receiving yards on two catches and the offense converted just one third down in 14 attempts.
What ended up winning the game was defense and special teams. The defense forced four turnovers including three interceptions of Jason Campbell, who was 27 of 56 for 248 yards. Special teams also blocked one punt, resulting in a touchdown, and deflected another.
"Our defense and special teams gave our offense a lift and got them going today," Lewis said. "That was really a great sight to see."
The Bengals fell behind by double digits for Mike Evans Jersey the third straight week as the Browns took a 13 0 lead with 2:19 left in the first quarter.
Cleveland was up 3 0 when Dalton threw back to back interceptions to Joe Haden. The first one led to Billy Cundiff's second field goal when the defense held after facing first and goal at the Bengals 2.
The second one, though, resulted in Dalton's second pick 6 of the season when Haden jumped the route and returned it 28 yards.
Said Dalton of the picks: "I think there was a little miscommunication on what exactly what we were doing. Unfortunately it happened right there where Joe (Haden) was able to make those plays. We didn't let it hurt us. We bounced back."
The two interceptions gave Dalton eight in a nine quarter span and brought out plenty of boos and jeers, which one member of the defense took exception to.
"I don't appreciate it. Stay with us and believe with us. That's what you're here for (if) you're here to support (us)," defensive end Michael Johnson said. "That's not our plan to go out there and have something bad (happen). The negativity doesn't help. Stay positive, stay encouraging we'll fight."
The Bengals started to regain momentum late in the first. James Harrison intercepted a Campbell pass intended for Josh Gordon. Johnson got pressure in the backfield and helped to deflect the pass at the line. At first, Harrison's first interception in three years looked to be a pick 6 but it was nullified by a block in the back penalty on Brandon Thompson.
They took over on the Browns 22 and two plays later Dalton connected with Jermaine Gresham for a 25 yard touchdown. Gresham, who got his second touchdown of the year, did a nice job of staying inbounds on a corner route after the reception as Haden tried to knock him out of bounds.
After the Browns went three and out, special teams helped set up the go ahead score when Shawn Williams partially deflected a Spencer Lanning punt. The Bengals took Mike Evans Women's Jersey over on the Browns 38 and went on a five play drive that culminated in a 6 yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Mohamed Sanu after Browns safety Chris Owens blew the coverage.
Sanu also factored into the biggest play of the drive when he had a 25 yard completion to Giovani Bernard to the Browns 9.
Lanning's troubles were far from over. Later in the quarter he had a punt blocked by Jayson DiManche. Tony Dye, who was signed from the practice squad on Saturday, got the loose ball and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown.
"Sometimes Jayson nflbuccaneersofficialshop.com/Austin_Seferianjenkins_Jersey_Buccaneers and Shawn they don't have that opportunity (to affect a game) except for in that role. Their sense of urgency gets ratcheted up pretty good," special teams coach Darrin Simmons said.
The defense then got their fourth touchdown of the season after Vontaze Burfict forced a fumble on a Chris Ogbonnaya reception and returned it 13 yards. Campbell checked down to Ogbonnaya but Wallace Gilberry slowed him down and Burfict forced the fumble with his right shoulder as he scored his first NFL touchdown.
"We www.nflbuccaneersofficialshop.com/Austin_Seferianjenkins_Jersey_Buccaneers didn't panic and stuff because we've been there before. We told ourselves that we can get back into this game," defensive tackle Domata Peko said. "We've been here before and it helps us get better."
The wild half, which took nearly two hours, concluded on a Mike Nugent 41 yard field goal, set up by Adam Jones's 27 yard punt return into Browns territory. It also set the franchise record for points in a quarter. The previous record was 28, which was set three times with the most recent being Nov. 19, 1989, against Detroit.
Cleveland drew within 31 20 midway through the third quarter on a Campbell 74 yard touchdown to Josh Gordon, who beat Dre Kirkpatrick in coverage up the left sideline. The Bengals, though, scored the final 10 points.
On the final touchdown drive, which went 52 yards in seven plays, the running game had their most effective series with six straight runs, including five by BenJarvus Green Ellis for 37 yards. The drive concluded with a 2 yard touchdown pass from Dalton to a wide open Alex Smith, who spent three years in Cleveland before signing with the Bengals during the offseason.
