We are a spiritual group, we fans. We believe in the evidence of things not seen. We are a faith based organization, if "organization" is the right word.

  Things have not been so good this year, at least by our recent standards. We went to the Super Bowl last year. We were losing badly, and then the lights went out. Higher power, you say? I would not go so far. But when the lights came back on, we did much better.

  We didn't win, of course. But we were hopeful. But this season has not progressed the way we hoped it would. We were whomped by archenemy Seattle. Seattle is easy to dislike, what with all their grandstanding about how super loud their fans are. Also, their penchant for hitting our players harder than they had planned on being hit.

  Then we lost to the Colts. Then we won some games against inferior teams. Carolina was supposed to be an inferior team as well. But we lost to them in a disheartening display of offensive ineptitude.

  It is true that we have injuries. It is true that our receiving corps has been riddled with balky body parts. There are excuses to be made. But still, on Sunday, we had Colin Kaepernick and and . was back. The offensive line was still the offensive line.

  We didn't score a touchdown the whole game. We were turned every which way but loose, as the saying says, after the manner of sayings. Meanwhile, Seattle was winning again. We are 2 1/2 games behind them now, and our prospects for the playoffs are looking iffy. What happened?

  Could it be . You'll recall that Alex Smith was our quarterback for a number of years. Last year, he was having a career season until an injury sidelined him. Kaepernick replaced him and did pretty well, but Smith was still the starter. Protocol and politesse both suggest that you let the starter have his job back unless and until he plays his way out of the position.

  He didn't do that. He didn't get a chance. By the time he got better, he'd lost his job. Well, he didn't exactly lose it. He knew where it was. It's just that someone else had it. was fascinated with Kaepernick's potential. Everyone was.

  It was a tough decision. Was it the right one? Alex Smith ran into a lot of bad luck as a 49er. He went through a series of offensive coordinators, had to learn new systems, played with people who were somewhat less than all stars. Still, he showed up and did his job. He didn't complain.

  And for all that, he got bounced. He bounced over to Kansas City, the worst team in the league last year. It looked like more bad luck for Smith. Lo and behold, Kansas City is undefeated this year. Smith is a big part of the reason.

  Smith made lemonade out of lemons again. He is clearly one of the most pleasant people ever to walk out on the NFL stage, and now he's finally successful. Somewhere else. Somewhere not here.

  Did the 49ers' shoddy treatment of Smith contribute to this year's woes? Did Jim Harbaugh tempt the gods once too often? These are, of course, theological questions, but they are questions fans are entitled Logan Thomas Cardinals Jersey to ask.

  Fans are entitled to ask anything. It is their money that funds the billion dollar behemoth that is the NFL. If the fans speak loudly enough, the fans might even get rid of the Redskins name for the Washington football franchise. Anything is possible, even progress.

  Modern professional sports are like passion plays. People of virtue are supposed to prevail, even though they often don't. Every fan believes that his or her team has a unique corner on the truth and goodness market. But fans get to believe whatever they want. They bought the football game; they can use it to symbolize anything at all.

  If Kaepernick had not replaced Smith, we would have lost a good bit of the fire and fun that made the Niners such a hoot last year. Still, now, in his second season as a starter, Kaepernick looks lost as defenses have adjusted to his particular skill set. The receivers have not helped.

  This Sunday, the Niners meet the , another good team. If all goes badly, and there is much reason to suspect that it will, the Niners will be officially average, better than many but not as good as some. The looming return date with Seattle looks like an occasion for despair.

  Dan Dierdorf to retire from broadcasting after season

  Dierdorf played offensive line for the Cardinals from 1971 83, earning All Pro honors six times. He then headed straight for the broadcast booth. His three decades as an analyst marked the longest current tenure on TV.

  ''I've just never done anything else in the fall other than be in an NFL stadium,'' Dierdorf said in a phone interview.

  Now he hopes to spend some time in a college football stadium. Dierdorf estimates that in those 43 years, he's attended just five games played by his alma mater, Michigan.

  ''I want to go tailgate with some of my old buddies,'' he said.

  All those years of practicing on artificial turf in St. Louis wore down his joints, and walking through airports got harder and harder. Using a cane, he'd have to sit down every 100 feet.

  Dierdorf said he still feels mentally sharp, a serious concern among retired NFL players. In some ways, the physical limitations made the decision easy; he really had no choice.

  Dierdorf considered retiring after last season. The hardest part was ''breaking up'' with play by play announcer Greg Gumbel and their production team, he said with a chuckle.

  Making the announcement now will allow Dierdorf to thank all the team personnel who helped him over the years as he calls his final few games. This Sunday, he'll work Jets Ravens in Baltimore.

  He still may do some broadcast work in St. Louis or radio that doesn't require much travel.

  Dierdorf was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996, and in 2008, he was recognized with the hall's Pete Rozelle Radio Television Award. Frank Gifford, John Madden and Len Dawson are the only others to receive both honors.

  Dierdorf spent 12 years on ABC's ''Monday Night Football'' before rejoining CBS in 1999.
