There is an interesting story behind it that is very famous among Hindus. The people of Braj village used to worship Lord Indra. Lord Indra is the God of Rain according to Hindu mythology. People of Braj used to harvest their field in this mountain itself. But Lord Indra got angry seeing people of Braj worshipping Goavrdhan Parvat instead of him. He got angry and started torrential rain to destroy the Braj Village.
After seeing this, Lord Krishna showed his Leela by lifting the Govardhan Hill on his little finger for seven days and giving shelter and saving people of Braj from the anger of Lord Indra.
