#gurupurnima #sangeetsadhana #maihargharana #ghat #maihargharanaghat Greetings On the occasion of Guru Purnima In music, we believe that in music swar is derived from Eshwar It is a medium to find that which is sacred within and without, the stream in which one may fathom inner depths and reach great heights of perception of the rasas of life. Some of us at Sangeet Sadhana who have chosen to stay anonymous have put together an offering of a Gat in Yaman Kalyan composed by Baba Allauddin Khan of the Maihar Gharana and originally played by the Maihar Band, a rare gem that Baba nurtured after an epidemic in the 1920s that left many orphaned. He invented instruments and taught the orphans and others to whom he became Baba. The Maihar Gharana thus did not depend on family-related by blood for its survival. It fostered eminent musicians like the Sitar maestros Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee; Sarod exponent Ali Akbar Khan; Bahadur Khan and Sharan Rani, Surbahar virtuoso Annapurna Devi; flautist Pannalal Ghosh and violinist V G Jog, to name just a few. Even Hariprasad Chaurasia owes his musical lineage to this tiny princely outpost, three stops away from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. Today we owe allegiance to those who inherited this piece of art from him and passed it on to us, to treasure, nurture and pass on. We do this on behalf of the custodians of this treasure from the present to honour the guides of the past and create future Gurus and Sangeet Sadhaks. Come partake of this offering, share its joy and revel in the waves of notes that emerge from a timeless ocean of music.
