Values play a critical role in leadership behaviors. So what are ‘values’? Values are a set of inate beliefs we all have as individuals. We develop our values as a child, initially through the unconscious influence of parents - who are modeling behavior which the child learns from. Integrity, honesty, caring, excellence, respect, family I just some of the values that we develop. Understanding our values is very much a part of self knowledge. What is important is not just the label of the value that is the word to describe it, but what that value means to each person. Integrity may will mean one thing to some person and something quite different to another person. Loyalty as a value to someone may mean that they are loyal to their family, but not to their colleagues in the workforce. Understanding values is a critical part of the first practice of Exemplary Leadership in The Leadership Challenge. The practice is Model the Way. If a leader says the integrity is a value of his or hers, and their behavior, then doesn’t support that statement, their credibility suffers. If a leader says, he believes in teamwork as a value, then the behavior he demonstrates must reinforce that he says teamwork is a value. Credibility is essential for effective leadership. As a leader, if you don’t live your values, how can those you are leading believe in other things that you’re saying. When leader lives his values, he build trust with those around him or her. Those who are following know that they can always trust what their leader is saying. For leaders in the Middle East, because of the culture and their faith, there are common values, which may be present more often that in some other cultures. These values include respect, family, faith. Organizations will often state on their website the values which are theirs. What’s important is that there is a clear explanation of what each value is.
