Abstaining From the NFL
The air chills, the humidity departs, the school bell rings, the shofar blows all signs that the football season has begun to eat my Sundays. Or would be eating them if I hadn't resolved, unlikemost Americans(even most women), to opt out of the NFL this year.
I am here to report that I survived my first two NFL free weekends. It was a strange experience, as if I'd delayed the sun setting for four hours. What could I possibly plan my Sunday around?
News flash: watching football is a time suck. Studies have shown there's 11 minutes of action in a game that takes three hours. So even though I've tried to convince myself that I can be productive during the game checking e mail, folding laundry, even working out that's still a lot of wasted time trying to not waste time.

So instead, on the NFL's opening Sunday afternoon I cooked dinner a real dinner, with different dishes and a complicated recipe. I helped the kids with homework, with the attention span to actually help.
But my newfound free time is merely a by product of my resolution. Why have I chosen to abstain from pro football? I have four downs of reasons:
First down: head injuries. Thesad talesof retired NFL players who suffer brain trauma from repeated concussions are now legion. Yes, there's a new settlement for them but that $675 million is going to be spread over 60 years and thousands of former players, with an additional $91 million going to research and medical monitoring. (And this is all just a fraction of 1% of the revenue the league will make in the next two decades.) Plus, the NFL gets to keep secret the information it's compiled on brain injuries and football. Should I be watching for entertainment a hazardous activity when its effects on the entertainers are being swept under the turf?
Second down: performance enhancing drugs. Sure, NFL players use some of the same drugs you and I take to recover from injury. But they also rely on substances that are dangerous to them. Performance enhancing drugs are now so rampant that players who don't takesomething are arguably handicapping themselves. Embraces Marijuana, Sports May Need To Follow Suit)
Third down: if the NFL didn't exist, would college football be so corrupt? And this is where I'll admit it: My weekends have not been entirely football free. suburbs. And more important, my college alma mater, Northwestern, once a doormat, is at last nationally ranked.
(MORE:We Are Always Ready for Some Football)
When I tell my friends I'm not watching the NFL, they say college football is far worse, because you can add the slavery of uncompensated players and a corruption of academic mission to the head injuries and performance enhancing drugs. True. But isn't the NFL responsible for the dynamics of college football? It's the league that forces players to go to college, essentially turning big time conferences into its farm system and giving the NCAA a cudgel to keep collegiate athletes in line.
(MORE:TIME Cover Story: It Time to Pay College Athletes)
Fourth down: I'm pushing the demand curve in the right direction, just a little. So many of the arguments about the NFL end with a sigh of, "Well, it's an unstoppable force, so let's try to fix it rather than end it." But that feels like surrender. Small actions add up, and you might as well start somewhere. I know my one hybrid car isn't going to stop global warming, but I'm telling the auto industry that I'm willing to pay extra to help the planet. Marlon Brown Jersey My refusal to watch the films of Roman Polanski won't stop him from making films, but as the father of daughters, I'm not going tohelphim. We can either surrender to a demand curve or try to make a small difference. Let others sue. Let others rant. I'll just go for a bike ride on a beautiful fall day.

I quit watching football in 1970 when I was in the service overseas. The last Super Bowl I watched, Broadway Joe was the quarterback. Prior to then, I wathed 2 games every Sunday afternoon. I found futbol, AKA soccer, to be a much better sport. As for the violence, it will remain in the sport as long as the players and owners get rich. The game is slow and boring. I used to enjoy Canadian Football more because it is faster and, to me, required more skill because the teams only have 3 downs to move the ball into first down territory but have many more options to score.
I agree let's boycott not only professional football, but all violent contact sports including college football, boxing and hockey and demand tougher penalty rules for basketball and soccer. May I also suggest playing soccer with shock absorbing helmets and flexible plastic boots. I recall playing soccer in bare feet in post WWII Germany since I owned only one pair of shoes. Rugby may be an excellent sub for football and does not require costly padding and equipment that should help reduce college sports budgets.
I have watched (and played into high school) football all my life, but I agree it is probably time to take a break. It has surpassed www.officialfootballravensstore.com/WOMENS-CHRIS-CANTY-JERSEY.html the NBA in thuggery, passed MLB in PEDs, passed the NHL in unneccesary violence for entertainment purposes. Like the Coliseum was to www.coltsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-REGGIE-WAYNE-JERSEY.html the Romans, Americans are flocking to football as the "city on the hill" crumbles. College football is a serious joke and should be dismantled and banned. Fine. Don't watch football. However, don't judge every player based Justin Tucker Womens Jersey on the actions of some any more than you would judge the people of the previously mentioned careers as a whole. Many pro athletes use their stardom to push positive platforms in their communities. Football is one of my family's greatest loves. It brings us together in spirit and defeat. The only thing your boycott is doing is teaching your children to generalize and stereo type groups of people based on Marlon Brown Limited Jersey biased information. Don't you EVER again watch the local evening news and say, "oh it's so sad that someone got in a car accident." It's equally as sad that someone was accidentally hurt in the NFL, but you're not changing the channel from the news, are you? Bad things happen. NFL players know what they risk when they play. I know the risk when I get in my car.
Look, the problem with the political spectrum on both sides is that they are ridiculously anxious with the hand wringing of things that they are are not required to participate in, but others may get some benefit from.
You don't want to watch football? OK, that's fine. Take your hybrid car, go for a drive and partake in the lush natural bounty that our country has to offer. There is no one stopping you. However, don't try to justify yoruself with some specious arguments of concern for the health of these millionaire athletes and the state of our student athlete collegiate system. That will just cause you to choke and suffocate on your own smug.
So while you watch the leaves turn from the front seat of your Prius and nomming on your vegan, whole grain, sustainable, renewable, bean curd salad, I will be set in front of the HD flat screen with Sunday Ticket to see how the Giants are doing, apparently wallowing in my shallow unconcern for the health and welfare of my fellow humans. We have a person writing an article for a newspaper that reports on horrible acts of violence and misery everyday (which they make money off of) saying we should not watch football because of the misery and violence it causes. The arguments put forth could be applied to a great many things in life. For example I could say I'm not going to buy pharmaceuticals because it lines the pockets of heartless shareholders who lobby for the cheap healthy alternatives not to be available to the general public (why cure when we can treat). No one is holding a gun to the NFL players head, they chose to do what they do and I'll happily watch and live vicariously through them. When it becomes something that is not an option and is forcing people then I'll stop watching. First, the news is reporting things that are happening around the world. You watch the news to gain knowledge. You then use that knowledge in parts of your life. "Don't drive here because traffic accident," or "Don't eat at this place because it's dirty." There is no learning going on that you use for your life by watching the NFL. Second, an analogy to a traffic accident? The NFL is a game that's played on purpose. Players are not getting accidentally hurt. They tackle and hurt each other on purpose. You don't drive your car around looking for an accident. It happens, um, on accident. Because he finally understands the severity of the injuries and that they do this to each other on purpose. Now you have an strong case for him to use this same principle with watching hockey, boxing, and say MMA.
Kansas City Chiefs surprise Auburn's Dee Ford in first round of NFL Draft
After all, the former Auburn defensive end made the prediction long ago. He just didn't know his first round destination in the NFL Draft would be Kansas City."I'm definitely surprised it's Kansas City, but I'm not surprised (I went in) the first round," Ford said on a teleconference late Thursday night. "I'm very erratic right now and definitely honored."The Chiefs picked Ford with the 23rd overall selection in the NFL Draft, even as the Atlanta Falcons reportedly attempted to trade up and possibly snag the SEC's sacks leader.Ford heads to the NFL with his future as either a defensive end or outside linebacker, though the SEC's co leader in sacks last season doesn't seem to care where he lines up on the next level. The Chiefs will place him at outside linebacker to start his professional career, but will also bend down at the line of scrimmage."We are putting the hand in the ground," Ford said. "They're going to give me that freedom. I think they see what I can do and they see what I can evolve to be. He sacked Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston twice in the Tigers' 34 31 loss in the BCS National Championship."He's healthy now," Kansas City coach Andy Reid told reporters Thursday night. How to Cure Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy CTE Cayce Approach
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative progressive Matt Overton Jersey disease typically found in people who have had multiple concussions or head injuries. Athletes in boxing, Matt Overton Authentic Jersey wrestling, hockey, football, and other contact sports have been diagnosed with this illness. There have been suicides that have been associated with CTE, such as retired American professional football player Andre Waters whose CTE was diagnosed in his brain tissues after his suicide, and Dave Duerson who committed suicide reportedly as a result of suspected CTE.
Conceptualization of the Cure for Chronic Traumatic EncephalopathyIn a general sense, if a part of the human body becomes ill or injured and if there is resultant inflammation at the site of the illness or injury, the presence of inflammation can create problems at the site of the illness or injury. The brain is no exception to this rule. For example, researchers Dr. Daniel Lindqvist and Dr. Lena Brundin of the psychoimmunology department of Lund University in Sweden have stated that when there is inflammation inside of the brain, the inflammation is a very strong contributing factor in the occurrence of depression which leads to suicide.
Granted, it should be noted that head trauma that occurs as a result of football or other causes is not the only thing that can cause inflammation in the brain. For instance, researchers have said that D'Qwell Jackson Colts Jersey various things such as a serious case of the flu, genetic vulnerability, autoimmune disease like rheumatism, or also allergic reactions could lead to inflammation. Still, in terms of CTE, experts have said that head trauma is the major cause of CTE.
Based on what is known thus far, CTE appears to have the following mechanism. Head trauma occurs. This then leads to inflammation in the brain. Then there is degeneration of brain tissue. This leads to accumulation of tau protein and TDP 43. Then the appearance of CTE occurs. The person becomes depressed and eventually suicidal.
The Cure for CTE Using Cayce ConceptsObviously, if a person does not participate in contact sports where there is likely to be head trauma, that reduces the likelihood of CTE. However, if a person has already sustained brain injury and if a person already has CTE, then in order to cure CTE it would necessary to start the process of healing by counteracting brain inflammation because researchers have said that brain inflammation is a major reason that depression and then suicide occurs.
In sports, when inflammation occurs, typically a first step is to put ice on the site of the injury. So, that means that an ice bath or an Elasta Gel cranial cold pack cap or some other headwrap ice pack that is typically used in sports can be put over the whole head and on the back of the neck to reduce swelling. This sort of thing is already done in sports so this part is nothing new. However, icing needs to be done more often and more extensively because it is possible that some athletes, who have developed high pain tolerance, may not be fully aware of the extent of the brain injuries they have after they participate in an entire season of football games or other sports contests.
Also, the fact that football players do not have specialized cooling helmets is another reason that extra icing of the brain, back of the neck, and possibly also the front of the neck needs to be done. For instance, there are ThermaHelm helmets currently available to motorcycle riders that are designed to cool the head on impact, limit neurological damage, and increase chances of recovery in the event of head trauma. However, there are no such helmets for football players and other athletes who experience "repeated" head trauma over the course of an athletic season or www.coltsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-HAKEEM-NICKS-JERSEY.html over the course of many years of sport participation. Thus, due to the unavailability of cooling helmets for athletes who experience repeated head trauma, icing the brain area and neck extensively is very important for football players and others who choose to take the risk of participating in contact sports. Icing reduces inflammation.
The next step in healing would be to prevent brain degeneration. As discussed in alternative medicine, if the Cayce wet cell is used regular strength or double strength with gold chloride solution or gold sodium solution such as Cayce suggested, it will release electricity into the nervous system and reverse brain degeneration. This treatment was suggested by Cayce many years ago and, according to anecdotal reports, this treatment has been reportedly helpful for patients with neurological disorders. Granted, the reader should keep in mind that the use of electricity for neurological problems is not solely an alternative medicine treatment.
Modern traditional medicine physicians are also exploring the use of electric current in the brain. For example, there is an electrical treatment called "deep brain stimulation" which is currently being used to treat depression and various other illnesses such as epilepsy. Physicians realize that the brain is an organ that is both chemical and electrical. Since the brain itself is electrical, that is why physicians feel that it makes sense to use electric current in the process of treating brain problems. CTE obviously is a brain problem that involves depression. Since even modern traditional physicians are now using electric current to treat depression, it seems plausible that putting electric current into the brain could be an effective way to help cure CTE.
The next step would be to enable healthy brain chemistry. Taking steps suggested by Cayce such as consuming an alkaline diet, consuming sufficient water such as eight cups per day, and having adequate intake of vitamins and minerals would enable healthy brain chemistry. Also, not consuming liquor and not taking performance enhancement drugs would also tend to help create healthy brain chemistry.
Also, in order to enable more healthy brain chemistry, curing leaky gut syndrome (thinning of the colon walls or ulcerated colon) would be necessary so as to make sure that there were no excess toxins floating around the body and brain. For instance, Cayce made a comment that if there is thinning of the colon walls and if toxins flow through the colon walls and into other areas in the body, various kinds of illness can result depending on where the toxins happen to settle in the body. Pertaining to the brain, in reading 943 17 reportedly Cayce said that if toxins settled in the brain then "softening of the brain" will result and that would be unhealthy. Cayce stated that drinking cold slippery elm tea or cold American saffron tea helps to heal thinning of the colon walls.
Another step that could facilitate healing would be to make sure that there are no structural or alignment problems in the central nervous system which could be causing coltsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-KELVIN-SHEPPARD-JERSEY.html problems with absorption of vitamins and minerals. For instance, chiropractic spinal adjustment treatments could be done in order to make sure that there is no spinal misalignment and to make sure that the neck curve is optimal. Some chiropractors may even prescribe a cervical neck pillow for the patient so that when the patient lies on his or her back, the arch of the neck is supported; this might be done in addition to spinal adjustments. This is important because Cayce said that spinal misalignment can potentially cause excess pressure on the colon which could be preventing the brain from sufficiently absorbing vitamins and minerals from food intake. Inadequate nutrition for the brain could lead to bad consequences in cases of CTE.
If underlying glandular problems are present in the body, then it is possible that the Cayce suggestion of drops of Atomidine in water could be used. Also, stress reduction, being in a healthy environment, use of Cayce castor oil packs over the abdomen and liver, getting colonics, taking vitamin supplements in some cases, prayer, and also acknowledgement of past life karmic factors involved in the illness are all things that Cayce mentioned as being important to do in cases of degenerative illness. CTE is an example of a degenerative illness so Cayce's suggestions would be applicable. Some consider topics like past lives, reincarnation,or karma to be controversial. However, Cayce insisted that these concepts are relevant to the discussion of illness. Keep in mind that there are anecdotal reports of D'Qwell Jackson Elite Jersey many people recovering from various illnesses using Cayce concepts.
Assuming that circulation in the body and brain is normal, assuming that the colon is not overly clogged or impacted, and assuming that waste is being sufficiently removed from the brain and body, the above mentioned steps can help to reestablish normal and healthy conditions in the brain. Keep in mind that the CTE mechanism begins when there is head trauma, then brain inflammation, then degeneration of brain tissue, the accumulation of tau protein and TDP 43, the occurence of depression, and then suicide. The above mentioned Cayce treatment steps would tend to interfere with the CTE mechanism and would tend to create more normal and healthy conditions in the brain. Then, of course, once the brain becomes more chemically and electrically healthy, the patient would be cured and would no longer have CTE.
5 NFL Teams with Successful 2010 Drafts
Having a successful NFL Draft won't win you a Super Bowl by itself, but it sure makes the road getting there easier with fewer speed bumps. Drafting well helps you on the salary cap end of things, but also gives you the freedom to pick and choose free agents and gives you a consistent feeder system of young fresh players to keep plugging into your team. Show me a consistent playoff team, and I'll show you a team that knows what they are doing on draft day. It's true that the draft is not an exact science, but it seems year after year the same teams keep having good drafts while others miss on picks left and right. This year for the first time that I can remember, some teams that haven't made the playoffs in a while had strong LaRon Landry Authentic Jersey drafts. Here are the five teams that graded out the highest this go around with the draft. Some may surprise you.
Baltimore Ravens If it's possible, the Ravens got stronger on defense with this draft. They added depth and filled some openings, and Raven's fans have to be excited. Excited to see the likes of linebacker Sergio Kindle come into town. Kindle slid into the second round and Baltimore scooped him up. But the real steal of the draft may be getting the huge Terrence Cody out of Alabama. Cody's weight problems are well documented. and there is a question to how many snaps he can play, but he is a mountain www.coltsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-DQWELL-JACKSON-JERSEY.html and it's hard to move a man this large. Tight end is a position becoming more and more critical for NFL teams. The Ravens got a good one in Oregon's Ed Dickson. Dickson fills a need in adding depth at the tight end position. Later round picks like David Reed and Ramon Harewood could make the team and help right Arthur Jones Elite Jersey away. The Ravens get an "A" for a draft where they didn't even have a first round pick.
Kansas City Chiefs Either Chief's GM Scott Pioli is a genius or they will run him out of town. He took possibly the most talented player in the draft with picking Eric Berry out of Tennessee with their first pick. Two other talented players in Dexter McCluster and Javier Arenas went next and they will be expected to contribute right away. They now have a couple of options for returning kicks. I think the Chiefs will Love Tony Moeaki, a tight end out of Iowa that they were able to land with the 93rd overall pick. If he can stay healthy he will start and help right away. They also got another safety late in the draft with Kendrick Lewis out Ole Miss. He also could start this year and can cover and hit. The Chiefs got more athletic with this draft, don't expect them to have a winning record this year, but they are building slowly. A
Oakland Raiders Is it possible the Oakland Raiders had a decent draft? The Raiders have to be better with Jason Campbell now at quarterback and getting offensive tackle Bruce Campbell in the 4th round. Taking Rolando McClain in the first round was a bit of a surprise, but I like him and he fills a need. Texas DT Lamar Houston was a solid pick in the 2nd and again immediately helps the defense. Add another blazing WR into the mix with Jacoby Ford and DB Walter McFadden from Auburn, the Raiders got value from top to bottom. I expect this draft to really bolster the defense right away. And any time you can upgrade from JaMarcus Russell at QB it has to be called a successful draft. B+
San Francisco 49ers Under GM Trent Baalke and Coach Mike Singletary the 49ers appear to be turning around. The team seems to be taking the personality of it's head coach with a tough no nonsense persona. Look at the two first round picks they had. Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati are two impressive physical specimens. Davis weighs in at 323 lbs and Iupati at 331 lbs, that's a lot of beef. Getting USC safety Taylor Mays and 242 pound Penn State linebacker Navorro Bowman, with their second and third round picks was a blessing. Add late round selections Anthony Dixon and tight end Nate Byham and the draft was solid from top to bottom. Even their final pick cornerback Phillip Adams could help this year. A great draft by the 49er's braintrust. A
Detroit Lions You are not hallucinating, the Detroit Lions are quietly building a team that will be able to contend in the NFC North. The Loins got help on both sides of the ball, but the difference maker will be Ndamukong Su, the defensive pass rusher from Nebraska who will try and make life difficult for NFC North quarterbacks. With their second first round pick the Lions grabbed Cal back Javhid Best. The Lions have struggled with their ground game for years and Best should be a force running on the turf of Ford Field. Offensive lineman Jason Fox can play anywhere along the line and I'm high on Amari Spievey, Arthur Jones Authentic Jersey and Iowa Hawkeye who can help in the Lion's secondary. The Lion's are a team on rise, and are maybe a year away. I give them an http://www.coltsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-MATT-OVERTON-JERSEY.html "A".
It's really too early to tell how the draft will pan out for these teams. The players need to see how they will fit in their new team's system and how quickly they will adapt to a new level of football.

Fox snubs Pam Oliver in favor of Erin Andrews for NFL sideline coverage
Oliver revealed the news, which was discouraging for her to say the least, on Sunday night. The upcoming T.Y. Hilton Jersey NFL season will be her last on the sidelines. Once her sideline duties are over, Oliver will remain within the Fox Sports family but will take up a different broadcasting role. Robert Mathis Jersey While she expressed disappointment that a younger, blonder Andrews had replaced her, Oliver took the demotion in stride.
"I live in the real world and I know that television tends to get younger where women are concerned," Oliver said. "And I'm not saying these younger girls don't deserve a chance. I know I've had my turn."
Andrews began working with Fox in 2012. Her extensive knowledge in the sports world has landed her on the college www.coltsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-ANDREW-LUCK-JERSEY.html football sidelines, as part of a broadcast studio panel and even co host of "Dancing With The Stars." Sure, she's very nice to look at, but her ample broadcast experience makes Andrews more than qualified for Oliver's job. Nevertheless, Andrews is no imbecile; besides nearly Trent Richardson Limited Jersey referring to Justin Verlander as coltsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-PAT-MCAFEE-JERSEY.html Justin Bieber in a post game interview, she seems to know her stuff.
Since the news broke, Andrews has not spoken about her promotion. She will be on the sidelines for Fox's headline NFL games while Troy Aikman and Joe Buck make the calls from the booth. Regardless of how the next few years pan out, both Erin Andrews and Pam Oliver will be seen on the Fox airwaves for years to come.
