Hyperlipidemia is a medical term of exceptionally high levels of fats in the blood. A human body has 2 types of lipids in the blood — triglycerides & cholesterol. The former is made when the body stores unnecessary or extra calories and may come from the diet as well while the latter is naturally produced in the liver and found in fatty foods.

What are the causes of the condition?

There is bad and good cholesterol, in simple words! Bad cholesterol builds up in the artery walls of a person and makes them hard & slim. Good cholesterol cleans up the bad cholesterol and moves it away from the arteries back to your liver.

The basic causes responsible for this are unhealthy lifestyle choices as it hikes badcholesterol and lowers the good cholesterol levels. People who are overweight, eating junk, and have bad habits are at higher risk of this. Obesity, smoking, alcohol, lack of exercise, and bad eating habits can make you at risk. There is also a type of Hyperlipidemia that gets inherited from genes.

Diagnosis

Hyperlipidemia has no symptoms though, and the only way to detect the condition is to have a blood test known as a lipid panel or lipid profile. This test is to check the cholesterol levels of a person and the report of the test will analyze low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides.

Treatment

Let’s talk about hometreatments first!

A person needs to go through lifestyle changes to managing the condition, even if it is inherited. Along with this, the risk of heart disease or a stroke can be reduced. Taking a heart-healthy diet that has healthy fats, omega-3s, fiber, fruits, and veggies can help in lowering the bad cholesterol levels and improve the good one!

Some other treatments are losing weight that lowers your total cholesterol levels, doing physical activity, and avoiding bad habits. Besides these home treatments, there are Hyperlipidemi medications that would be recommended by the doctor such as statins, resins, inhibitors, injectable medications, etc.
