Ratan Naval Tata was born in Surat on December 28, 1937, in a business class family. His parents were Naval Tata (father) and Sooni Tata (mother), who later got divorced. After their divorce, Ratan Tata lived in the care of his grandmother.

He completed his initial study in Mumbai, and later for higher studies, he got went to Cornell University, USA. After that, he took admission to a Business School and worked in Los Angeles for a couple of years. Finally, after his return to India, in the year 1961, he joined his own Tata Group and started his first job in Tata Steel.

Struggles and Successes

In 1971, he was appointed as the Director-General in Nelco, which was not doing good financially. Mr. Tata, with his dedication, brought the company 20% more profit than ever. But, soon during the Indira Gandhi government, India was under emergency, and soon, the impact of the same was visible on Nelco. In 1977, the Tata group faced many union strikes, which ended up with a lock on Nelco.

Around the same time, he was assigned another project of Tata Group, i.e., Empress Mill, which dealt with textiles. Mr. Tata tried his level best to bring this company back to profit, and for that, he suggested making the company more modernized. But nothing worked due to the low demand for the types of textiles being manufactured. Soon, this company was locked too, but Mr. Tata being a man of vision, was not satisfied with the decision.

In the year 1991, J.R.D. Tata appointed him as the chairman of the company after seeing his capability and working spirit. This decision was opposed due to Ratan Tata’s experience, but everything started falling in place later. In fact, under the supervision of Ratan Tata, Tata Group was able to touch the sky and open up many more companies across the globe.

In the year 1998, Tata Motors come up with its first launch- Tata Indica. Soon after that, Tata Tea took over Tetley and Tata Motor- Jaguar, Land-Rover. All this earned Ratan Tata a great name and opportunities to expand more and never stop.
