Coping With Incontinence While Travelling

Having urinary incontinence and needing to travel can be a nightmare for many. While it can make your journey a little bit more challenging, it doesn’t mean that you have to give up travelling altogether. Instead, it is a matter of planning ahead of time, making sure that you know all of your options, and be equipped for anything. Here are some of the ways you can ease your worries about journeying across long distances:

Map Out Your Journey

It doesn’t matter if you are only travelling for a couple of hours to another city or will be going to a different country, planning is essential. In your case, it is not museums or tourist attractions that you need to worry about, it is bathrooms. Regardless of where you are going, make a point of noting all of the public bathrooms in the vicinity. Thanks to the internet, this is a lot easier to do than before. If possible, mark these spots on your phone or scout them out the moment that you arrive at your destination. This way, you can get to the bathroom quickly when you need to. This is something you will need to do if you will be travelling by car as well.

Make Bookings Ahead of Time

If you are going by bus or by plane, this makes things a little easier for you. Still, there is going to be some preparation required. The moment that you book your ticket, you will also need to secure your seat. Figure out where the toilet is situated and get the closest seat possible. Also, since you will be moving up and down quite frequently, it is best to get an aisle seat. Don’t wait until the last moment to reserve your seat as it may be quickly snatched up. If you are having trouble making a reservation, always explain your situation to the person that you are dealing with. It can also help to mention your condition to one of the cabin crew on an airline so that you will be given certain preferences.

Carry Large Quantities of Supplies

Whether you typically use Depend briefs, adult diapers, or incontinence pads, make sure to stock up on them. Make your calculations based on how many days you will be staying away from home and add more, just to be on the safe side. If you are travelling within the country, you should be able to order more online. If you are going to a foreign country, however, you may find that you are going to take a large number with you. Particularly when flying, make a point to pack most of your supplies in your carryon luggage. This way, if your flight is delayed or if your baggage is lost, you will still be fine.

Manage Your Liquid Intake Better

The natural tendency is to want to limit or cut out liquids while you are travelling. This, however, can aggravate your situation. Instead, drink adequate amounts of water and avoid fizzy drinks, caffeine, alcohol, and other stimulants.

This is how you can properly cope with your incontinence while travelling.
