3 Newbie Tips for Time Lapse Photography

Performing photography techniques often seem intimidating to newbies. One example is the use of time lapse photography. This method, which involves a footage of fast-moving objects or occurrences, is often mistaken to be a pro-move only. In reality, however, even beginners can try to capture a series of images at a regular interval and combine them to form a time lapse video.

If you are new to photography and you want to try this technique, here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Spot your subject. Determining what object or scene you want to capture is important in time lapse photography. Some choose to show nature’s beauty, such as the sunrise, sunset, or even the movement of clouds. Others choose to depict city-living and highlight the hustle and bustle of cars on the streets. Whichever subject you choose, make sure you take note of surrounding circumstances, such as the weather and the location, to help you plan ahead.
  • Get your gear on. In photography, a well-planned composition helps beginners carry out even the most complicated of methods. After deciding what subject you want for your footage, preparing what you will use comes next. First, you need the right camera. For this technique, some newbies swear by GoPro time lapse Their cameras are perfect for the job as they are compact, and they strike a good balance between price and quality.

Next, have a fully-charged battery. Since you will be using the camera for a long time, also consider getting extra batteries for back up. It also helps to know your camera’s manual settings and how to use it, for faster set up.  Lastly, get a stable tripod and have a memory card that can accommodate the estimated number of shots you will need.

  • Learn to edit. Time lapse photography does not end in shooting a series of photos. You also need to know how to edit these raw images to reduce unwanted results, like image flickering. For beginners, there are many free software programs available in the market to help you render good videos. Get yourself familiar with the features and use the program to improve your overall presentation.
