The Role of Candidate Talent Testing in the Hiring Process

During the process of recruitment, candidate talent testing is a common feature. Having been initiated more than fifty years ago, and used extensively by the majority of enterprises worldwide.  Competition is everywhere; between enterprises for market share, as well as potential candidates for the increasing number of openings. Any potential candidates are thus required to go through a series of skill assessments and ability tests to be absolutely sure that the employer gets the required talent with relevant qualifications. In this article, we will discuss the advantages of conducting candidate talent testing before presenting candidates with the final offer of a job. (Information credit: Global Talent Mine)

1. Tests are objective:  The traditional procedures of hiring employees based on their CVs and personal interactions with interviewers cannot effectively predict on-the-job performance.  Unstructured interviews, mass résumé screenings and pre-interview calls are not enough to guarantee the level of a candidate.  This is due to the subjective nature of this methodology rather than a directly job oriented approach. Candidate testing works differently, providing the management with a clearer, more objective, conclusion.  A well designed candidate talent testing procedure will leave no stones unturned, and is thus, considered to be the most reliable method of hiring.

2. They are standardized: Unlike traditional methods of screening calls and unstructured interviews, candidate testing offers a fairer and less subjective assessment of talent, eliminating the absence of a consensus on how to rate candidates. Standardized talent testing are centrally administered, laying emphasis on strictly job related criteria.

3. Saves Time:  One-on-one job interviews are a great way to perform an initial assessment, but that’s about all. Assessing the many traits of a potential employee can take a substantial amount of time and effort from both parties. Candidate talent testing provides the best way to assess a candidate’s knowledge.  Besides skills like typing speed, written communication, or problem solving skills, certain behavioural traits can also be assessed.

4. Quantifiable insight:  Another problem with cumbersome interview procedures is the lack of quantifiable insight into the applications.  Structured tests can provide the management with a tangible value to make important hiring decisions.  It eliminates employer bias, wrong conclusions, or simply having to work with instinct, and provides a much more streamlined and reliable assessment methodology.

5. Work intensive assessment: Candidate talent testing can easily examine the specific job related traits of a candidate.   There are many types of such tests like personality tests, focusing skills, as well as labour intensive tests like writing speed and solving complex problems.  The employer can choose to focus on the desired test for selecting the candidates with the job-specific skills among the many tests available. The tests are designed in such a way as to focus solely on the job requirements at hand.

A well designed, standardized talent testing program can add objectivity to a recruiting process.  As the burden on human resources personnel begins to increase, more and more employers are using this screening process to their advantage.
