ABS: One of the most commonly used 3D printing materials; this plastic material is widely used in making the structures of cars, mobile phone cases, appliances and many other things. It is thermoplastic in nature and has a base of elastomer that are made up of polybutadiene, making it more flexible and shock resistant. When heated between 230ºC and 260ºC it can be used for 3D printing purposes. It is a durable and a tough material which makes it withstands temperatures as low as -80ºC. It is a reusable material that can be amalgamated with chemical processes. Since ABS shrinks when it comes in contact with air therefore in order to prevent warping the printing platform should always be heated.
PLA or also known as Polylactic acid has more advantages compared to ABS. PLA is manufactured using renewable raw materials such as corn starch. One of the easiest materials to print, PLA does have the tendency to shrink a little after the printing process is complete. Unlike ABS, one does not require to heat up the printing platform. It is also able to print at a lower temperature between 190ºC to 230ºC. This material is more difficult to manipulate due to its high solidification and cooling speed. It is also important to note that any model that is made of PLA should not come in contact with water since that can lead to its deterioration. But due to its wide variety of colours this material is highly versatile for 3D printing purposes.
