The world is evolving at a rapid pace and with it the technologies are being upgraded and are getting better too. Today we have more power in our pocket than we had in our homes in the 1990s. Not long ago, holograms and smartphones were just science concepts but now the smartphones can check our health as the technology is evolving. Some of the application areas of artificial intelligence are health, education, entertainment, services, security and many other domains but these fields are specifically the most to benefit from this technology. People are beginning to explore the benefits of AI and how it can ease their life. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning go hand-in-hand so that machines can learn about critical programs to gain knowledge and respond to demands to perform similar human-like tasks. Artificial Intelligence enables a machine to self-learn from experiences and human intervention which finally provides us human like capabilities for interaction and problem solving potential. From chess-playing computers to self-driving cars, AI is present in many areas which we not might have thought of. AI makes use of Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to accomplish tasks like these which drives automation and intelligent processes. Recently the most progressed fields are Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Voice Assistance and Artificial Intelligence, and people are beginning to wonder what the future might be like with this kind of technology. Niantic’s Pokemon Go, an Augmented Reality based smartphone game, enables the player to catch Pokemon on real time locations. Automaker Company Ford, uses Microsoft’s HOLO LENS to design cars and experiment with new designs. Other automakers, Audi and Cadillac use Virtual Reality to enhance the customer experience so that the buyers can see the car model and the features. So in short what I mean to say is that now-a-days industry giants have started implementing technologies like AR and VR in their fields and are experiencing a much better way to run their business. Examples for Voice assistance technology are Apple’s Siri, Samsung’s S Voice, Microsoft’s Cortona and Google Assistant. A lot of development has been made in the field of AI in the last few years which has motivated developers and companies to create more products and services around it. These are some of the points which suggest why Artificial Intelligence is important: 1. Repetitive Learning though data AI carries out continuous computerized tasks which are high volume and automated. Through Deep Learning, AI seeks to get in depth information about a problem or a query raised by an individual. Human enquiry is still important to ask the right question so that the learning is in the right direction. 2. The fact is that robots have already become a part of the society; in fact, it is now an integral part. Talking about big data, it is definitely a buzz word today. The future of AI has been transformed considerably after it has been clubbed with new developments in the technological world like big data. Enterprises worldwide generate huge amount of data. The data doesn’t have a specified format. It could be both structured and unstructured. Years back the data generated used to get wasted as there was no analytics performed on it. But now with the advent of big data, data is processed and analysis is performed on most of the data that is generated. Analysts make sure they are able to derive meaningful patterns, trends, and associations that simplify business decisions. Big data is such a big deal these days that even small and mid-scale companies after looking at all the big data benefits wish to get benefitted from it. There are ample of benefits of big data, but the biggest advantage is gathering the surprising amounts of information and then analyzing all the information that is obtained from web. The term ‘big data’ is comparatively new, but the concept has been a part of the world of robotics since a long time. In fact, it has been a part of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) as a Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, established much earlier in the year 1986. Robotics haven’t labelled anything, but have a long history of working with Big Data. According to Dubrawski, “Robotic technology powered by AI has always been about analytics from its advent”. He also believes that robots have the capability of sensing and perceiving data through their sensors. They then link what they perceived along with actions through planning. Hence performing analysis and processing of information at all stages in loop of sense, plan and act. For years now we have relied on technologies and borrowed analytics from methodologies such as machine learning and many others. However, robotics come up with some original research and techniques occasionally. These techniques are usually designed for solving robotics related issues, but later they can be used for any application. How has Big Data impacted Artificial Intelligence? 5 reasons about Big Data that promoted AI implementation: Increased processing capability: With the evolution of processors in the recent years there has been drastic growth in computing speeds too. Billions of instructions can be processed in few micro seconds. Along with the traditional sequential computing through CPUs (Central Processing Unit), there is an advent of parallel computing through GPUs (Graphics Processing Unit) seen. This has indeed increased the speed of processing data and helped derive advanced protocols for machine learning in AI applications. Algorithms used for voice and image processing: Understanding and learning from human communication also known as Machine Learning, is a fundamental requirement of AI. Human voice data sets are a lot in number, with numerous languages and dialects. Big data analysis supports breakdown of data sets to identify words and phrases. Similar is the case with image processing, it identifies appearances, outlines, maps to process information. Big data analysis enables machines to recognize images and learn how to respond. Open-source programming languages and platforms If it was possible to store a data set in a single storage device, then AI data model would have used not very complex programming languages such as Python or R, which are also known for being a data analyst. Unlikely, for commercial scale operations enterprises use Hadoop for big data management. Hadoop is an open source, java based software framework that has capabilities of reading and analyzing distributed data sets. Since Hadoop is open source it is reliable and free programming tool for data analysis. It has made AI algorithm execution more efficient. Today AI and Big Data analytics are known to be two most promising technologies that enterprises can take along with them in the days to come. Internet has always seem to make the lives of the user easier through connecting to other people by computer or smart phones; now it looks to connect through the ‘Things’ installed in houses, streets, shops, organizations and multiple other places. The range of devices include smart TVs, smart wearables, sensors, smart grid, smart cameras, smart home appliances and many more. As we all know that these devices interact with each other in order to give an individual the desired result so that he/she can take an appropriate decision based on the findings. Every piece of information is recorded through the smart devices which stores it in a manner which can be retrieved later.Back in prehistoric times when cavemen first ignited fire; must’ve thought, is it safe? Over the years there have been many breakthroughs in day-to-day appliances which have affected our lives and has made the world a better place. We never knew for sure that what is safe for us and what isn’t but we have always learned newer ways to make our lives easier by implementing certain techniques and technologies. When it comes to Internet of Things, there is a lot to learn as we are still learning about the technology and we can successfully apply it our daily routine. There are multiple areas which are poised to be the best places to install a device in order to connect with other devices for sharing of data so that the appliances can serve us. Due to distribution of data to multiple connected devices, some might say the privacy of data goes for a toss. When there are devices installed in various areas which are connected with each other and continuously transfer data, concerns regarding data privacy rise giving birth to data theft which leads to inappropriate use of data.IoT offers various benefits to consumers by creating numerous ways to interact with technology as the connected applications will offer ease in living while merging the virtual and the physical world by combining the data. There are some concerns which are related to security, privacy and safety of the data created and shared by the Internet of Things. Huge amount of data is created when these devices are interconnected and they interact with each other to combine data for an end result which an individual can use for one purpose or another.Concerns regarding the authenticity of these devices are always questioned because they not only collect sensitive data but also transfer it which opens windows for misuse of data as the devices shares observations about daily activity of a person and thus consumers will obviously want data privacy.     Today, the term Smart Technology has changed surreptitiously from being a technology that operates with its own predefined parameters requiring minimum interference to something that also enables green IT and environment protection. Most of this smart technology is driven by Internet of Things which are devices that help us interact with our belongings like digital sensors, home appliances and wearable smart devices. According to several analysts, while we still need to develop technology responsibly, a time will come when technology and environmental sustainability will go hand in hand with a need to develop interdependently. When the concept of IoT was coined, it came with the idea of billions of devices that were needed to sense and collate data to enable smart decision. These devices needed energy of their own and it was expected to impact the environment as well. However, further analysis made it clear that the benefits derived from these IoT devices and the overall technology will actually help promote a greener world. It is said that even the amalgamation of these billions of devices will only add a few power stations on the face of this earth; many will also be built on the self-powered formula with solar, hydro or other energy generation methods. Let us have a peek at some of these IoT technologies that can actually further reduce negative environmental impact and the corresponding carbon footprints: 1.Smart Structures: A smart structure is the one that helps its occupants and stakeholders interact with the building via a smart power grid wherein they can automatically control the environment and features of the structure like ventilation, heating, lighting security, etc. So in case the building is sparsely populated in the afternoons on weekdays, heating, lighting and water supply can be automatically reduced. Similarly, in case of energy or resource wastage like water leaks, the devices can instantly update the maintenance crews. These smart automated decisions make such smart buildings around the world a boon for environmental conservation. 2.Smart Farming: Agricultural industry around the world has faced the repercussions of environmental degradation like no other. While agri-tech is trying to do its job, inclusion of IoT in farming is changing the very nature of fields. Sensors are not only helping farmers to reduce waste but to also plan their farming activities better for utmost output from the least amount of resources. So for example, when the weather is about to turn too dry that the crops’ yield could be damaged, sprinklers start automatically or with approval of the farmer.     A few months back everything was in the ‘cloud’ but the buzzword these days is ‘Fog Computing’ and it is related to how efficiently data is being stored and accessed. Basically, cloud computing is the ability to store and retrieve data from an off-site location. Cloud computing is a major reason how the traditional phones got smart. Our phones don’t have a lot of built in space in order to store information that is needed to access applications and services. All the data is being transmitted to and from the cloud in order to provide the services we need. But there is a problem with cloud computing technology, it’s the limitation of bandwidth. A report by World Economic Forum (WEF) predicted that U.S. ranks 35th in the world for bandwidth per user, this is a serious issue if you’re trying to transmit data wirelessly. The idea of Fog Computing attempts to beat some of these physical limitations. With Fog Computing technology, all the processing happens on devices physically closer to where the data has been collected, instead of sending data to the cloud. With the evolution of Internet of Things, more and more physical objects (devices) are being added to the network and they all are connected wirelessly to transmit and receive data. Fog Computing is also called as Edge Computing. It is supposed to resolve problems by storing data close to the ‘ground’. In other words it stores data in local computers and storage devices, rather than routing all the information through a centralized DC in the cloud. Fog or Edge Computing is a prototype campaigned by few of the leading IoT technology players such as Cisco, IBM and Dell. They are pioneers of representing the change in architecture wherein intelligence is pushed to edge from cloud. Basically, fog computing is responsible for enabling quick response time, reduces network latency and traffic and also supports backbone bandwidth savings to achieve better quality of service (QoS). It is also supposed to selectively relay applicable data to the cloud. IDC predicts that by the end of 2025 about 45 per cent of world’s data would be moved closer to the network edge. It is believed that fog computing is the only technology that can withstand AI, 5G and IoT in the years to come. Another study by IDC estimates that by 2020, 10 per cent of the world’s data will be produced by edge devices. This will drive the need for more efficient fog computing solutions that could provide reduced latency. So what’s the main difference between Edge computing and Fog computing? Cisco coined the term ‘fog computing’ and IBM calls it ‘edge computing’. Basically, edge computing is a subset of fog computing. It simply refers to data being processed close to where it is originated. Fog computing lets data to be processed and accessed well and more rapidly, which reduces the risk of data latency. A brilliant use case for fog computing is the smart traffic light system, that has the capability of preventing accidents and deduce traffic congestion by changing its signals based on surveillance of incoming traffic. Also, this data is sent for further analysis to the clouds. The growth of fog computing frameworks provides much more choices to organizations for processing information and data where ever it is appropriate. There are certain applications, where data may need to be processed as quickly as possible – for example, in a manufacturing industry where all the machines connected in a network need to be able to react to an incident as soon as possible. Fog computing helps create low-latency network connections between devices and their analytics end points. This architecture in turn reduces the amount of bandwidth needed as compared to cloud. It can also be used in scenarios where there is no bandwidth connection needed to transfer data. Hence, data is processed close to where it is originated. An added benefit is advanced security features that can be applied by users in a fog network, right from segmentation of network traffic to virtually extending firewalls to protect the network. It would be wise for any enterprise relying on someone else’s data center for storing their data to consider fog computing which is an emerging trend. They should also figure out how their businesses might get affected if they continue using traditional ways to store data in the days to come due to lack of bandwidth to access the data.
