Washing your own house is not to so daunting if you have a few tips from professionals.
It can be easy if you approach it with a bit of help with chemicals and application. There are so many people on forums that cannot tie their shoelaces let along give advice for this.
Firstly, we can discuss the material your home is built from.
Rendered houses
These are best cleaned using a spray of 2% sodium Hypochlorite and a suitable surfactant. While pressure cleaning makes them look better it does not kill the mould spores and the surface will quickly become discoloured. If you have a home gurney with the usual soap venturi attachment you have a start for the best way to attack this.
You can use bleach although it is usually only 2-3% sodium hypochlorite before you mix it with water. Our processes use about 1-2% SH being applied to the surface. This means bleach is too diluted to be much good when drawn through your inline venturi.
We suggest buying a couple of litres of pool chlorine as this is generally 13.5% SH and will mix to give the required amount. Great caution is recommended if you have not done this before. It will not hurt the surface although it may harm you. Correct PPE is required to stop this mix getting into your eyes and sensitive skin.
It must be also stressed to wash out the venturis that come with pressure cleaners as they are generally not made for this concentration of SH. You will find the springs disintegrate quickly if not completely cleaned after usage. You may only get one use from the inline venturis that come with you pressure cleaner.
The mix to clean many household surfaces includes a surfactant to make bubbles to hold the SH on the surface for longer so it can do its work. Very few surfactants are SH stable so just mix what you need as it will deteriorate quickly and be of no use.
If you are doing this at home, you can mix dishwashing liquid with the SH to give the grip and hang factor. Bearing in mind these soaps do not last for very long when mixed with SH.
Using this method will leave those green walls shining again easy with the correct chemicals.
Brick houses
Most bricks are easy cleaned using just pressure to remove wasp nests etc. By spraying the chlorine solution first, it will loosen any dirt and kill mould. This leads to a far better outcome and stays cleaner for longer.
Some older bricks become brittle and need to be cleaned in this way as to not damage the surface.
Although you can just blast most bricks, using this solution, you can spray windows and screens at low pressure using a fan spray.
This is the preferred method for cleaning soffits and other painted surfaces on a brick home.
Generally, this will leave the windows to a streak free finish if your water is free of dissolved particles and minerals.
Timber and siding
Using low pressure and the correct products will clean these houses easily.
Use your venturi that came with your pressure washer to spray the solution mentioned earlier will leave you with a great result.
As easy as that making sure to coat all areas. You will see before your eyes any areas that have been missed.
Avoid using too much pressure as it will damage paintwork and areas may look clean although without a solution to kill the mould it will return quickly.
