The above service delivery issues are one of the reasons why many Organisations of reasonable size decide to bring their IT in-house. In my experience, this is another trend that seems to go in and out of fashion depending on the financial climate. If the economy is struggling then people tighten their belts and outsource, but if its thriving then they will make a business case for employing an IT Manager. The argument of in-house vs. outsourced IT Support is an old one, but one that’s changed in recent years. The answer to ‘what’s better?’ is dependent on your business size, affordability and the demands that your business puts on its internal IT infrastructure. Automated discovery and installation has never been more effective and configuring and rolling out applications and software updates is easier now than it’s ever been. In addition, many businesses have replaced their complex inefficient in-house servers with Cloud-based software and applications which are provided ‘as a service’, such as Office 365 for example. I’m not trying to do myself out of a job, but. The above points are the main reasons why Small business simply don’t need to pay a premium for Professional IT Support anymore. Technology is easier to use, it’s FAR more reliable and FAR easier to understand, especially with the help of Google and You Tube. Large Organisations with a big user base will still require a full-time presence, either from an outsourcing incumbent or a Full-time IT expert. But the IT Services requirements of the average small business should have changed significantly in recent times – if they are keeping their IT Systems up to date. This IT Services Company is a good example of one that I've recently found that seems to have embranced the idea that IT simply doesn't need as much maintenance as it did.  How will this change IT Support as a service model? From their perspective, IT Support Companies will need to concentrate more on obtaining and retaining larger clients. But this will prove to be difficult because most Medium to Large enterprise setups can afford to employ an internal IT Expert. In my opinion, most IT companies will need to adapt to change and update their Services model for the current climate. In short, IT Services should become a lot cheaper moving forward because businesses that have an up-to-day IT Infrastructure should require less support.  There should be no reason why support shouldn’t remain full-time because the number of calls received will be minimised, this is something we’ve realised at the new Company that I work for. So far, this new Services model is working very well for both us and the Customer.  If any other engineers and consultants are reading this, then I’d really like your feedback on my thoughts. Am I writing off the existing IT Support services model too quickly? Is it a case that we’ll all be providing Consultancy in the future because most business IT requirements will be served from the Cloud? Are we all going to be out of a job? I really hope not!
